Forward deployed engineers and solutions engineers both work closely with customers, and job titles are used loosely, so the two are easy to confuse. The difference that matters is who owns production code.
The one-line difference
A forward deployed engineer builds production software inside a customer's environment. A solutions engineer helps a customer decide to buy, usually with demonstrations and proofs of concept.
The Pragmatic Engineer draws the line clearly: forward deployed engineers write code on the customer's own infrastructure with the customer's tools, while solutions engineers rarely do, and often work with anonymized or offline copies of data.[1]
Side by side
| Forward deployed engineer | Solutions engineer | |
|---|---|---|
| When | After the decision to build | Before the decision to buy |
| Main output | Production software | Demonstrations, proofs of concept, technical answers |
| Where the code runs | The customer's environment | Usually a demonstration or sandbox environment |
| Accounts at once | One, for months | Many, in parallel |
| Measured on | What runs and is used | Deals won and technical wins |
Where solutions architects and sales engineers fit
Solutions architects and sales engineers usually sit on the sales side too. AI companies now hire pre-sales architects for this work; Anthropic, for example, lists its applied AI architect role as pre-sales.[2] Some solutions architects do build, especially at systems integrators, so check what a role owns rather than trusting the title.
Which one should you hire?
- If you sell software and need to win deals, hire solutions engineers.
- If you have decided what to build and need it running inside a real environment, hire forward deployed engineers.
- If you sell software that customers struggle to deploy, you may need both: solutions engineers to win the deal, and forward deployed engineers to make it work afterwards.
