A forward deployed engineer is one of the better-paid engineering roles in the market, and the price of hiring one depends heavily on how you hire. This guide sets out what public data shows about salaries, what we know (and do not know) about contract rates, how agency fees work, and what pushes the cost up.
Salary: what public data shows
Pay transparency rules mean many employers now post salary ranges. These are base salaries from public postings; equity and bonuses come on top where offered.

Across the market, Levels.fyi reports a median total compensation of $206,073 for the role, with the 25th percentile at about $175,000 and the 75th at about $283,000.[6] Indeed puts the average salary at $178,578.[7] Lightcast data reported by Fortune gives a median advertised salary of $188,000, against about $145,000 for software engineers generally.[8]
Contract rates
There is no credible public benchmark for US forward deployed engineer contract rates. Rates quoted on vendor sites rarely say how they were measured, so treat them with care.
A simple floor helps. A base salary of $182,000 to $250,208 divided by 2,080 working hours is about $87.50 to $120.29 an hour, before benefits, payroll taxes, time between assignments, insurance and the provider's margin. A contract rate has to cover all of those, which is why contract rates sit well above the base-only figure.
Agency fee structures
- Direct hire. A one-time fee, usually a percentage of first-year base salary. Arc and Gun.io both publish 20%.[9][10] Recruiting firms quote contingent fees of about 15% to 25% of base, and retained searches of about 25% to 35% of first-year cash.[11]
- Contract. An hourly, daily or monthly rate for the time worked. The provider employs or engages the engineer and bills you.
- Contract to hire. A contract rate, then a conversion fee if you hire the engineer. Some providers reduce the fee the longer the contract has run.
What pushes the cost up
- Seniority and scope. An engineer who can lead an engagement costs more than one who builds within it.
- Security clearance or citizenship requirements. These shrink the pool sharply.
- Travel. Many postings expect regular time at customer sites.
- Industry depth. Healthcare, financial services and regulated energy work reward domain experience.
- Urgency. A start date next week narrows the choice more than one next quarter.
How to budget
Start from the outcome and the time it needs, not from a rate. Decide whether you need the capability permanently or for a defined piece of work, then compare a direct hire's salary and fee with the contract cost over the same period. Compare hiring options, or ask us for a view on your case.
